I finally made a ham. Now, for those of you who bake or smoke hams often, this might not seem like a big deal. But when I say that I made a ham, I mean I MADE a ham — pig to table. Actually, to be fair, it's more like "pig to cutting board" as it is so delicious that my husband, Mark, and I are picking at the salty slices before they even hit the plates.

Although it's not usually the main event, "Come on over, we have HAM!!" isn't often part of an invite; nobody is sad when they see it as part of a spread.

Ham is like the meat version of that friend you really like but don't see often enough. Every time you run into it, you think: "That was great! I should make more of an effort to have that regularly in my life." Then you're off until the next time you run into that friend by coincidence, or there is some major holiday where a ham graces on the table. You'll remember how enjoyable it is just to start the cycle over again.
